Two words: Signing Bonus

Does adding this phrase into your job title increase candidate response rates?

Consider the click-through rates of these job titles:

Job Title Click-through

Physical Therapist *Signing Bonus* 1.10%
Physical Therapist — $79,000 .21%
Physical Therapist .20%

The stats suggest a signing bonus is important to job seekers, so advertise it if you’ve got one, and get one if you don’t. Even something small should do the trick.

Remember that ZipRecruiter lets you edit your job postings as often as you’d like, so give this strategy a try today!

I nervously shifted my oxford canvas shoes atop the shaggy throw rug, which — if you can imagine a ticklishly retro rectangle of faux suburban lawn grass — undoubtedly eased any pre-interview jitters.

You’d think that an outlandish, avocado-colored piece of flooring accessory would stand out in an office building, but quite the contrary. I barely noticed it once my eyes were magnetically drawn to the matching green wall, no corner of it left unpainted in a shade of topiary-scaped green which above all else screamed vibrancy. Here was a creative space wherein any prior scruples were cannonballed out of mind by a dominantly assuring sense that productivity would no doubt flourish like the striking splashes of color within its enclosure.

This, I told myself, I could get used to.

Several weeks later, the green wall has become my backdrop. Coming from a freelance writing gig and a private tutoring one before that, attention to detail is somewhat of a personally explicit mandate that I require of myself in the workplace. I mention this because that’s the atmosphere I’ve been walking into for the past three days: a space full of meticulously focused intellects who are energetically wired into their specialties.

My concentration? I essentially assist in boosting ZipRecruiter’s online visibility, whether that involves advertising on a micro-market scale or writing copy & contributive content. And you can bet I’m approaching these responsibilities with nothing short of a fastidious mentality. This is what I’ve loved about my first week at ZipRecruiter; it’s the sort of unforgettably prominent attention au détail of every team member that seamlessly cogs together like the well-oiled engine of a classic Aston Martin DB series coupe.

An auspiciously avocado green one.

Ok, so I haven’t actually worked at ZipRecruiter before, but I have worked with Ian, and Ward (two of the four founders) at two prior companies. So in a way it feels like coming home.

I remember Ian discussing the idea for ZipRecruiter over lunch years ago. It sounded good over tacos, but in the Internet world, ideas come and go like..well, like lunch. Flash forward to January 2012, and here I am with two former coworkers who have become good friends, working on the idea that came and flourished.

It was so exciting to watch ZipRecruiter become a success and now I am thrilled to be a part of the team as Head of Product. Essentially, I am here to figure out what our customers want/need from the service and provide an exceptional, tell-all-your-friends experience. If you love the service, have constructive criticism, want to share ideas, or just need ZipRecruiter to (fill in the blank) to make it so much better, let’s talk. Shoot an email to ken@ziprecruiter.com.

As I get older (not old, just older) it has become clear what’s important in my career…Working with smart people who respect one another, in a company that provides an exceptional product, where I can be challenged and have a work life balance that allows me time to spend with my wife and kids. I know it’s a lot to ask and creates a horrible run-on sentence, but guess what – I actually found it all!

The connection between academic achievement and employment is undeniable, so we set out to do something about it this holiday season.

One of the DonorsChoose.org projects we're proud to sponsor this year will allow under-privileged students to visit the California Science Center.

With 700,000 students, Los Angeles has the second largest public school system in the country. Yet only 55 percent of students in LA graduate from high school on time and many do not graduate at all. It should not be surprising, then, that many of our local youth grow up and face a life of underemployment and unemployment.

In many cases, our schools lack basic supplies like copy paper, calculators, and desks. The buildings are absent of libraries, gymnasiums, and cafeterias. Students aren’t afforded “luxuries” like field trips, athletic programs, visual and performing arts, or other much-needed enrichment opportunities.

It is for these reasons and more that we at ZipRecruiter decided to give $10,000 to educational projects on DonorsChoose.org. For those who aren’t familiar with the site, DonorsChoose.org provides a platform for teachers to request funding for various educational projects, after which donors can contribute any amount toward the project(s) of their choosing.

I was lucky enough yesterday to spend hours sifting through thousands of active projects in Los Angeles. After much consideration we completed funding for nearly 20 projects — projects which will reach more than 2,000 students this year alone. Ranging from field trips to PE equipment to math manipulatives for kindergartners with special needs, each project serves an extremely worthy cause.

Aside from helping to provide the youth of Los Angeles with the educational experience they deserve, we hope our contribution will help them on their way to the future they deserve.

This holiday season, whether you’re an individual, a member of a large corporation, or a founder at a small startup, we encourage you to join us in building the future.

As 2011 draws to a close, many will sit down and ponder how to better themselves in the coming year. While those around you swear off chocolate and vow to save more money, why not consider adopting the following 6 New Year’s resolutions for job seekers?

1) I Will Be Better About Networking

You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again: networking is key to finding a job. Some reports suggest that as many as 80% of open jobs are not made public, while other reports say that applicants with a referral are ten times more likely to have their resume viewed by a hiring manager. So get to it. Go to networking events. Reach out regularly to those already in your network. Identify at least five companies that you’re interested in and make contact via email, LinkedIn, or in-person.

2) I Will Ask for Feedback on My Resume

For one reason or another many job seekers don’t ask for help on their resumes. It’s time to ask. If you’ve asked before, ask again. Seek out people in your industry and those who have been in charge of hiring others in the past. Visit your university’s career and alumni centers, which will be happy to help regardless of how long ago you graduated.

3) I Will Be Strategic About the Jobs I Apply to

Far too many job seekers are opting for quantity over quality when it comes to submitting job applications. Stories abound of people who apply to 50 jobs per day and receive zero responses. Rather than adopting the more-is-better approach, you need to realistic with the jobs that you apply to and strategic with how you apply to them.

Don’t apply for an entry-level job if you have 10 years of experience, and don’t apply to be the VP of Marketing at a major company if you’re fresh out of school. Instead, find jobs that you are qualified or near-qualified for, then take your time with your application. Tailor your resume and cover letter to the open position and to the company itself. No two job openings are identical, so no two job applications should be either.

4) I Will Enhance My Online Presence

91 percent of hiring managers research job applicants on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, so make sure you have a solid online presence. Rather than hide yourself from search results (as many job seekers do on Facebook), use social networks to your advantage. Pick information that establishes you as a thought leader in your target industry and post content that makes you more hireable simply because you’re a great person. Publicly post photos of you volunteering or attending notable industry conferences. Tweet about pertinent news and comment on company status updates.

5) I Will Brush Up on Important Skills

Skill atrophy is a major concern of hiring managers, especially when an applicant has been out of work for a while. So stay current with skills that are crucial to your industry. If you’re an architect, continue building models. Statistician? Start a blog like OkCupid’s OkTrends. Aside from keeping your skills honed, you’ll build a portfolio and surprise hiring managers with how proactive you’ve been while out of work.

6) I Will Be Positive

Looking for a job can be emotionally draining, particularly when an offer doesn’t materialize right away. It’s crucial to stay positive, however, as your outlook can greatly influence your outcome. Companies want to hire people who are positive. Whether you realize it or not, hiring managers can pick up on even slight hints of negativity. Before you apply to a job, have a phone screening, or attend an in-person interview, visualize a positive outcome and think through your past successes. It may seem silly but, then again, it may make the difference in how a hiring manager receives you.

LinkedIn just announced 2011′s most overused professional buzzwords, as determined by the profiles of its 135 million users. The top 10 resume buzzwords in the United States include:

While these terms may sound great, they are too commonplace to distinguish you from the other 14 million job seekers out there.

So if you’re looking for a job, make it your New Year’s resolution to revise that resume and stand out from the crowd.
